POCKET-SIZED HTC ARIA DEBUTS IN ASIA PACIFIC

Malaysia – 18 August, 2010 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced HTC Aria™. This pocket-sized dynamo packs a punch with a five megapixel camera, a bright 3.2 inch HVGA display, and offers users Android smartphone functionality in an amazingly easy-to-carry design.

Along with being ultra-small at just over 10cm long and weighing a mere 115g (battery included), HTC Aria’s seamless wrap-around soft-touch back cover eliminates sharp edges, making HTC Aria exceptionally convenient to carry and comfortable to hold as well.

Pricing and Availability

The new HTC Aria is available at all authorized resellers at a suggested retail price of RM 1,799*. Availability at DiGi Centres and DiGi Specialised Stores will be in early September 2010. Standard retail HTC Aria package will come with a 2GB microSD™ card.

As retail price is at RM1799, getting a 12 months contract from Digi might give you around RM400 – RM500 discount on the phone I think. Is this a good buy? Probably, if you think it’s better looking than the HTC Legend and the yellow background under the hood.

The rumored HTC Desire HD has now surfaced! This gigantic phone comes with 4.3inch screen, 8 megapixels camera with dual LED flash, and it’s running on Android 2.2. No other specs available yet though. This phone looks similar to the EVO 4G, only with the front camera no where to be found. Gosh.. Why didn’t you include the front camera HTC?? Have a look at the video below. HTC, can I get one?? Please??

Few weeks ago, I got myself the HTC Desire. The Desire is the cousin to the Google Nexus One, with just a little bit of extra features and different design. Powered by 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 576MB of RAM, you can imagine how fast and smooth this phone is. The Desire is running on Android 2.1 Eclair, which updates for Android 2.2 Froyo is already on going for Europe set owners.

Hardware

The retail set comes with standard package. Charger, earpiece, micro USB cable and a 2GB SD card which is definitely too little to use on this gadget. SIS Malaysia should have done better by providing a larger size SD card as same like Touch HD which I owned quite some time ago. Even the overseas retail sets comes with a 8GB SD card.

Once you turned on the HTC Desire, there is no turning back to your old Winmo phones. It’s fast, smooth, way too smooth compared to my Touch HD. If you owned a HD2, it’ll be a different story though.

Desire comes with 3.7 inch Amoled display. Compared to Touch HD and the iPhone 3Gs, the latter ones actually have a slightly wider screen compared to Desire. Yet, the screen’s height is longer though.

The Amoled display is gorgeous. It’s bright, colorful and responsive. To be honest, the color is a bit over saturated and a bit too responsive. Until you get use to the responsiveness of the screen, you might end up accidentally clicking on some apps and buttons that you don’t want to.

The build of the phone is solid. It might not be as solid as the HTC Legend’s unibody design, but it’s just acceptable. The back of the phone comes with soft-rubberish finish which is very nice to hold with. The downside of the back cover is that you need to rip open the back cover using the top slit. You might break the back cover if you are not careful enough when opening it, although I haven’t seen any report regarding this. The Sim card and SD card slot is located under the battery which the battery have to be removed in order to gain access to it. So hot swap is not possible.

Compared to Google Nexus One, the trackball feature had changed to optical track-pad instead. Noise cancellation on Nexus One is left out but Desire comes with physical buttons instead of touch-sensitive buttons.

The 5 megapixels autofocus camera captures 5:3 wide still images. The photo quality is acceptable, and there are options for white balance and ISO for you to play with. Video capture offers 800×400 resolution and is pretty good as well. The Froyo updates actually enables 720p / H.264 video capturing capability though.

The battery life for Desire is one of the downside for this phone. Occasionally web browsing, listening to songs, sms, phone calls and playing some games during the day, you’ll be very lucky if the battery can last for more than 18 hours. Heavy usage at one time might last you around 5-7 hours. The charging cable must be with you all the time if you want to stay connected before you get home.

Software

HTC Sense UI is one of the best custom UI made for Android phones so far. The Homescreen widgets, Friendstream Apps, Social Network integration for contacts and also the great keyboard compared to the lousy stock Android keyboard. Flashlite is pre-installed so most of the flash contents on websites can be shown on your chrome browser, even flash videos too! But some of the flash contents are a bit laggy which you will see a better experience once updated to Android 2.2 Froyo.

Wrap-up

Overall, the HTC Desire is a great phone. One of the greatest Android phone so far. There are some better competitors like Samsung Galaxy S or Motorola Droid series but none the less, the HTC Sense UI made the Desire comes out the best compared to others. As Android 2.2 Froyo update is on the way, you might expect more features and stability out of this phone. At the retail price of RM2199, this phone definitely worth it (Most of the shops out there are selling at RM2000 nowadays).

So if you don’t mind, time for me to hunt some good quality phone cases and also install some custom ROMs on my Desire. I’ll come up with the root procedure for this phone in a while.

Wildfire will be the cheapest phone in HTC’s Android line. Compared to HTC Legend, there’s not much difference other than a slightly lower processor speed and some software add ons. Yet, Legend comes with higher screen resolution and unibody design. The looks of the Wildfire seems like a trim down version of the HTC Desire. Press release as below.

HTC Desire

Just get a Google’s Nexus One, stick HTC’s customized Sense user interface on it, replace the trackball with a nifty optical trackpad – and bam! You’ve got the Desire. This baby will run Android™ 2.1 (Éclair) with HTC Sense™ on a big and beautiful 3.7″ AMOLED touchscreen packed on top of a 1GHZ processor, 512 MB ROM/576 MB RAM, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash. Other than that, the browser offers multitouch function which you can zoom in and out using 2 fingers. How cool is that? While Nexus one is still not available in Malaysia, maybe the Desire might launched here much sooner than Nexus One though..

HTC Legend

HTC Legend is the upgraded version of HTC Hero, Comes with a 600mhz CPU, 3.2″ AMOLED screen, and 512 MB RAM/384 MB ROM. Same as the Desire, this phone is running on Android 2.1. The majority of the unibody design is cut from a single sheet of aluminum, ensuring that there are no screws or unsightly seams. Man, it’s gorgeous!

HTC HD Mini

HTC HD Mini is the compact version of the HD2. This baby is packed with a 3.2″ HVGA capacitive touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera and 512 MB RAM/384 MB ROM. Different from the two above, this one is running on Windows Mobile 6.5.3. Other than these, there’s basically nothing much difference compared with the HD2.

So which one is your favorite new HTC handsets here? The Desire is definitely the one that I want most! Hopefully it will be available in Malaysia soon. Can’t wait to get one of this.

Introducing the new Google’s Nexus One. Google just announced their own “super” phone powered by Android 2.1 on the 5th of January and it’s been a big hype around this new phone. Why? Google had been distributing this phone “secretly” for Google employees since last Christmas and the photos and specifications had been leaked all over the internet, causing the big hype.

So what’s so special about this phone? Most people are comparing this phone with the Apple iPhone. Manufactured by HTC, the phone is slim with only 11.5 mm deep, the screen is bigger, a 3.7 inch 480 x 800 OLED capacitive touchscreen (oo lala!~), powered by Snapdragon 1GHz core processor, 512 MB of of RAM and an expandable 4-GB microSD card, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and 720×480 video capture @ 20FPS, dual microphones for noise canceling and a trackball. The Nexus one is running on Android 2.1, which provides quite a few new features including nicer interface, speech-to-text, car-home GPS and a lot more.

Price? The phone is selling at $530 USD without contract and it’s currently only available in the States, Hong Kong and Singapore. You may log on to the Google Phone page to have a view on the phone but it will show that “the phone is not available in your country” . We might need to wait for some time until it is available in Malaysia. But I’m sure there will be a lot of people gonna get it from Singapore and sell it here .

So what do you think about this phone? I’m still considering whether to wait for it or go for iPhone 3Gs though.

Just bought my sister her Apple iPhone yesterday. All I can say about the iPhone is.. it’s really addictive!
