I wrote a post on how to reduce Mozilla Firefox memory usage sometime ago and now I found a few more tweaks that can make your Firefox go faster. You will need to edit the configurations in Firefox by typing about:config in the address bar. Hopefully these few tricks can improve your browsing experience

1. Limiting the RAM usage

By doing this tweak, you can control how much memory Firefox can use as we all know that Firefox EATS up a lot of memory sometimes. Filter up your search after “browser.cache” and select browser.cache.disk.capacity from the remaining options. The default setting goes all the way up to 50000, but there’s no need for that. You have to adjust the value depending on the amount of RAM memory you have installed. For RAM sizes between 512MB and 1GB, start with 15000. For RAM sizes between 128MB and 512M, try 5000, and you will be happy of the result.

2. Fetch Only Pages that You Click

Firefox has a built-in feature (enabled by default) that will pre-download the pages behind the links it thinks you MIGHT click. This will actually waste your internet bandwidth, CPU usage, and even your HDD space because it downloads the pages that you might not even want to see and store it in your computer. Here’s the way to disable it.

Type network.prefetch-next in the about:config page and you will see that the value is set to TRUE. Double click on the line, and it will change to False. That’s it. Firefox will only fetch the pages you click on from now on.

3. Loads Pages Faster

If you are using high speed broadband, you can try doing this tweak to make Firefox loads pages faster. Filter out the list after “network” then search for the key that says network.http.pipelining and set it to TRUE. Next, you may alter the key below (network.http.pipelining.maxrequests) and change it into a higher value – 30 for example. This means that Firefox sends 30 requests to load a page. Try it, you should see some difference here.

The Firefox search bar located at the upper-right corner of the browser is a very useful tool for a lot of users as they tend to use it to search everything on the net rather than typing Google.com in their browser and then type in what they want to search there. I’m sure a lot of people are using the Mozilla Firefox nowadays. But do you know that you can customize and add the search sites in the search bar in the upper-right corner of Firefox?

This is how to customize and add search engines to your search bar.

Click on the Manage Search Engines like the photo above. Then click Get more search engines (or just this link) to open a page with the list of search engines that you can add in. You can add all sorts of search engines that is listed there. There are varies search engines like news, entertainment, blogs, answers and so on.

You can also sort your most favourite search engines to the top of the list and the least favourite ones to the bottom.

By the way, I’m actually writing this post using this blog editor. Seems to me that this editor is good for you to blog while referring to some websites (copying others’ blog posts?? haha..) because you can still blog while referring to other websites on top of the window. But still I find it a little bit inconvenient. It would be great if there is more button on the toolbar.

I haven’t try out the Pings function so let’s see how this will work then. It’s up to you whether to use this plugin or not.

Mozilla Firefox memory leak problem is a headache for most of its users. Here is a tip to reduce Mozilla Firefox usage when it is minimized.

1. Type about:config in Firefox address bar and press Enter.
2. Right click in the page and select New > Boolean.
3. Type config.trim_on_minimize in the box that pops up. Press Enter.
4. Select True and then press Enter.
5. Restart Firefox.

By doing this, the memory usage will drop to around 10MB every time you minimize it and increase slowly up to around 50MB. When it is maximized, the memory usage will be around 50MB – 70MB. Although this is not the best solution for reducing the Firefox memory leak, it may solve high usage of memory of this browser.
