After 64 football matches, the World Cup 2006 Champion is born~! Italy won the 2006 World Cup after defeating the French with 5-3 penalty shootouts. It was a great match. France was awarded a penalty in the 7th minute after Materazzi’s trip on Florent Malouda and Zidane scored the penalty leading France with 1-0 lead. By the 19th minute, however, Materazzi had made amends, the big defender heading the equaliser from Andrea Pirlo’s corner.

Marco Materazzi, the hero who scored the equalizer.

The French played extremely well in the 2nd half but still unable to score a goal. The extra time would be the worst moment for Zidane’s career as he was sent off because of headbutting Materazzi.

Foolish act? Oh ya.. he should be in the WWE Championship after his retirement.. lol.

Italy won 5-3 penalty shootouts against France in the end after Trezeguet missed the 2nd penalty, which Italy never win a penalty shootouts before.

Italy are deserved world champions after this narrowest of triumphs over France. In doing so, they buried the ghosts of USA 94 and climbed above Germany as the most successful European team in FIFA World Cup history with four wins. For France and Zidane there was no fairy-tale ending and instead they are left to reflect on a bitter ending to an unexpectedly long adventure.
